The Teletrac Navman Commute Index ranks the top 50 most populous cities in the U.S. using seven key factors, which we deemed most impactful when determining how bad a commute is. These factors measure the stress of congestion, the likelihood of a collision and the quality of roads being traveled on.

Using reports and research from various 3rd party agencies, companies and non-profit organizations – including the US Census and the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) – we ranked these cities by applying a ranking score to each of the seven key factors which were compiled into a cumulative score, which we call the Teletrac Navman Commute Index. The higher the cumulative score indicates the worst the commute in said city.

Stressful commutes can lead to dangerous or poor driving habits and behaviors, so it’s important to understand which cities might negatively impact our customers’ drivers’ health more than others.

The country is widely reliant on workers being able to drive to work and return home safely, so it is important to understand the factors that could negatively impact the stress of America’s workers.
