In 2014, the driver shortage in the trucking industry hit a low of 38,000 according to the American Trucking Associations’ (ATA) 2015 Truck Driver Shortage Analysis. If the trend continues, the ATA predicts the shortage may reach 175,000 by 2024.
Yet finding the right employees for the road is not the only issue that is top of mind for carriers. The trucking industry has experienced a growth in the digital landscape, capturing vehicle data through GPS fleet tracking systems and driver hours through in-cab devices. Filling the back office with talent that can analyze the incoming data requires an information technology skill set. Some fleets may look to recruiting Millennials and Generation Z workers to fill these roles.
