Is Switching Fuels Realistic?

Transitioning an entire fleet of vehicles over to an alternative fuel source is not something that can be done overnight. And for companies that want to undertake a truly green initiative, they’ll need a vibrant, active, practical and organized methodology. The transition to alternative fuel sources may seem like an overwhelming task, but it can be successfully done if a fleet takes the correct steps.

Researching Technologies
A fleet should begin by reviewing all of the alternative fuel technologies available and identifying which are commercially available, cost effective, well-funded and the long-term availability of the fuel source. While there are many up-and-coming options, choosing a proven technology is the best alternative fuel option for long-term usage. An alternative fuel that doesn’t have widespread commercial usage very well could leave a fleet high and dry if it doesn’t get government funding to continue its operation. Fleet companies should also perform a cost-benefit analysis after narrowing the field of potential suitors. Since the initial cost is likely to be high regardless of which alternative fuel source is chosen, look more at the big picture items like the maintenance of the new alternative fuel station, utility costs, training, staffing and other preventative maintenance measures.

Creating a Plan
Develop the image of change that shows where the company will be and the intended outcome with the switch to an alternative fuel. This is a collaborative effort where the proposal showcases the need for the transition, the budget for the project, documentation of research, the financial offsets costs, a series of goals for the project, and the request for proposal for the design, bid and creation of the new alternative fuel station. Highlight the series of steps that have been achieved along the way to display what has been completed and what still needs to be completed.

Assemble the Objectives
Implement a goals and objectives examination for the changeover. This should include the tools necessary at all levels of the project. Identify the realistic timeframes needed for implementation and the funding for the entire project. Delays and missed deadlines can quickly derail the plan, so be sure to discuss financial strategies for the transition to keep the project on track.

Network with Influencers
Meet with and discuss these objectives with politicians in order gain more support for the alternative fuel project. Showcasing the highlights and benefits of this switch to alternative fuels will help during the endeavor and the community support will make transition a much smoother one.

Developing Synergy within the Company
Collaborate ask for the expertise and contribution from stakeholders, equipment manufacturers, employees, equipment operators, customer departments, and management. Develop relationships with employees, managers and customers. Get the support of your staff and hold meetings as you assemble the plan. Reach out to all employees within the agency as well. Advise everyone within the company of the technology, its safety and the seamless transition. Reiterate your plan and make available a concise summary to keep everyone informed. Hold vehicle demonstrations to alleviate any customer concerns. Plan regular meetings to keep all parties informed of the transition. Be communicative of the positive results and challenges and relay the progress of the transition.
