Recently Gary West, the director of transportation at Genesee Intermediate School District serving special and vocational education students in Flint, Michigan, was named one of 15 finalists for the Public Sector Fleet Manager of the Year from Government Fleet. Key to the honor was his use of telematics technology to centralize the management of 139 vehicles located in seven sites owned by six school districts and one private contractor.
The telematics deployment yielded over $1 million in yearly cost reductions. That also included monies in otherwise-hard-to-document Medicaid reimbursements enabled by in-vehicle terminals that allow drivers to record and transmit student attendance from the bus, plus savings realized by eliminating thousands of hours of additional paperwork related to driver time reporting and payroll processing.
Congratulations Gary for the well deserved recognition!
