Challenge:

As a public authority, Stockport Homes Group (SHG) prioritises all safety incidents reported by residents. However, the absence of technology to monitor fleet activity meant there was no reliable evidence to provide context for incidents involving their vehicles and drivers. Peter Harris, Business Support Manager at Stockport Homes, noted that there had been numerous false claims against their drivers that could not be substantiated due to a lack of data and video footage. This situation risked damaging the reputation of their workforce for the improper use of vehicles, even when they were not at fault. To address this, SHG sought to obtain information that would improve their understanding of road activities and job performance, thereby enhancing protection for their drivers and promoting a culture of safety throughout the organisation.

There’s no way we could take these trackers out now; we’d be lost without them! The solution has made things so much more positive and seamless in carrying out day-to-day activities, and due to that, we have had fewer challenging customer situations. The data is there to back everything up, and we can categorically say we’ve achieved the maximum ROI out of the solution.

- Peter Harris, Business Support Manager

Solution:

After discussions with Teletrac Navman, Stockport Homes identified a suitable package to implement across their fleet. They upgraded to a comprehensive fleet management system that allows fleet managers to access real-time data through an intuitive interface. Additionally, they incorporated the Safety Analytics module, which analyses data to monitor and track vehicle performance while fostering a 'safety-first' culture. Harris explained that with 89 vehicles operating across the borough, it had previously been challenging to respond to customer inquiries about service status. Now, with live tracking capabilities, they can pinpoint the location of each vehicle at any moment. In the event of an incident, they can verify whether a driver was in the area at the time, as well as access data on mileage and routes taken. This information enhances journey efficiency and provides insights into driving behaviours, such as harsh acceleration, braking, and speeding, all of which contribute to improved health and safety standards for both the public and their drivers.

Harris remarked that the collaboration with Teletrac Navman extends beyond fleet management, as they are also supporting SHG's transition to electric vehicles. As the housing provider for Stockport Council, SHG aims to electrify at least 60% of its fleet by 2025 to reduce CO2 emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2038, in line with Greater Manchester's goals. When Teletrac Navman introduced their new EV Readiness Tool, SHG quickly recognised its value. By leveraging AI to analyse historical telematics data, the tool provided a comprehensive roadmap for integrating electric vehicles into their operations. The results indicated that a significant portion of their fleet could transition to electric, leading to reduced CO2 emissions, improved fuel efficiency, and substantial cost savings over a five-year period. The tool also advised on the optimal number and locations for charging stations. Harris expressed satisfaction with the simplicity of the evaluation process, stating that it was quick and efficient. Although their journey is just beginning, he feels confident that Teletrac Navman has set them on the right path.

Results:

The implementation of Teletrac Navman's fleet management solution has led to significant advancements for Stockport Homes, including:

  1. Complete Visibility of Fleet Performance: SHG has achieved a 100% increase in visibility regarding fleet activities, enabling effective monitoring of their vehicles in real-time.
  2. Reduction in Speeding Events: The system has led to a notable decrease in speeding incidents among drivers, as well as a decline in average accident costs.
  3. Enhanced Verification of Customer Queries: The technology has improved the verification process for customer complaints and queries, allowing for better communication and resolution.
